Tan Long commune and the communes of Left (H. Hoa Hoa, Quang Tri) are famous as the “banana kingdom” of the Central region. On the occasion of the recent Lunar New Year, this place was crowded with sellers and buyers, now this situation is gloomy because the banana price has dropped dramatically … The price has dropped by more than 2/3.
Huong Hoa district has an area of about 3,800 hectares, concentrated in Tan Long commune and the communes of Left. For many years, thousands of tons of bananas have been exported to China, some ASEAN countries and consumed domestically each year. The banana tree has really brought prosperity to the locals. For example, in Tan Long commune alone, the locality has about 1,900 hectares of bananas, each year collecting from bananas is approximately VND 100 billion.
During Tet Canh Ty 2020, Huong Hoa bananas have been exported to China and served the needs of domestic consumers. Recently, due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the export of bananas to China through border gates was delayed. Since then, banana prices have also started to decline. Mr. Truong Dinh Tung, Chairman of Tan Long Commune People’s Committee, said that before the Lunar New Year, the market for bananas is vibrant, the price of bananas is quite high, from 7,000 to 8,000 VND / kg. After Tet holiday, the price of bananas dropped to 4,000-5,000 VND / kg and in the mid-April only 2,000 – 2,500 VND / kg. “This catastrophic price has made businesses, small businesses and banana farmers in the area difficult,” Mr. Tung said.
